4A THE CHOWAN HERALD, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23,2017 Local woman sees Lord’s miracle BY MILES LAYTON Editor When the nation wit nessed a solar eclipse Monday, ace photographer Rebecca Lowe was there snapping hard-to-get shots in Nantahala winch is locat ed deep in the North Caro lina mountains. Lowe said she was in darkness for about 2 min utes when the eclipse passed over. “All the dogs on the mountain started barking,” she said. “There was a baby in the group we were with who started crying. I wasn’t scared by what happened, but I got chill bumps and emotional. It was amaz ing.” Lowe said she shot the photos using a filter over her camera lens. “The photos I took of the eclipse luckily turned out pretty — some of the best ones I’ve ever taken of an eclipse,” said Lowe who cel ebrated her 68th birthday on Monday. “That’s a joke. Get it? That last eclipse was about a hundred years ago. Ha!” Lowe said the experience increased her faith in God’s glory. “If anyone doesn’t believe in the Lord’s miracles, they needed to be there and just look up,” she said. ^L.S. The couple are the new est Habitat for Humanity residents in Hertford. The organization uses volun teers to help lower the cost of building a modest home. The residents have to pay off the mortgage. “Thank you for coming out and I’d like to thank the people who are not here,” Mike Lyens said. He served in the Navy and had a job in the concrete industry, but a disease has mostly robbed him of his almost all his vision. Still he visited the site across from Hertford Grammar School as much as possible during construction. “It took a whole lot of people in the community to make this come together,” said Ron Cummings. One speaker quoted Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builder’s labor in vain.” And the home was a la bor of love said the builders who worked on it for almost five months. Perquimans and Chowan counties share the same Habitat for Humanity local affiliate. The Rocky Hock Lions Club in Chowan was one of the groups that helped make the home pos sible. Dave Johnson of the Rocky Hock Club presented the couple with a Bible. The State Employees Credit Union helped with the financing. Bill Ross, a Hertford SECU board member, of fered his thanks. The state SECU earmarked $10 mil- hon to build a new Habitat house in every county in North Carolina. By doing so, local Habitat affiliates don’t need wait 20 years to be paid back for the construction cost of that house, and can funnel the funds back to building an other one sooner. The lo cal Habitat group has been building one Habitat per year in one county and then doing the other county the next year. The hope is to be able to build a new house in each county each year. The other groups recog nized last week were the Disabled American Veter ans Camp 64 in Elizabeth City, American Legion Post 126 in Hertford, the Hert ford Rotary Club, Girl Scout Troop 57, N.C. Habitat for Humanity, the Town of Hert ford, First National Bank, A.R. Chesson and design planner Mitchell Ayers and Carrie Baker, Mike Flora of Flora Mirror and Glass, Mike Wisler who donated the cabinets, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Hertford United Methodist Church, Edenton United Methodist Church, New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Lu theran Church in Elizabeth City, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Paul AME Zion Church, Saint Paul’s Epis copal Church, Saint Anne’s Roman Catholic Church, Edenton Baptist Church and Albemarle Baptist Church.
